Upcoming Reading Strategies Test

October 23, 2008

Hi Grade 8s,
Geez, it has been a crrrazzzzy week!  WWW presentations, keeping up with classes, end of quarter approaching, etc.
For your test next week remember to look over your notes and check in the Reader’s Handbook for the following, in no particular order: context clues, main idea, inference, connections, and ways to actively read.
Just in case someone is reading this, impress them with your knowledge.  Please post a comment here that includes something you learrned from this unit.  Then check back to see what your classmates posted-maybe that will even help you study!

Good luck!

I learned how to make a main idea orginizer which makes it easier to find a main idea of a story/paragraph. For an example go on page 53 in the readers handbook.

In this unit, I learned how to use context clues to find the meaning of an unknown word. Context clues are when you use the sentence, the sentence before and the sentence after to figure out the meaning of the word. The sentences around the word usually give hints or clues as to what the word means. This was an important skill that I learned in this semester and I can use it when I am reading any type of text.

I learned that to be an active reader you have to visualize, compare and comprehend.

I learned that setting a purpose to your reading is useful because when you are reading you learn more since you actually know what you are looking for before you even start reading. I also learned that inferring is not at all hard, all you have to look at is the sentence or maybe paragraph around a word to figure out it’s meaning.

I learned how to make an inference. You combine what you learned from the text with what you already know.

I learned that it is a really important thing to understand what your reading and to be an active reader. To do this it is a good thing to take notes. You can make a main idea organizer which helps you understand the main idea, you can use context clues to figure out a word you don’t know, compare things that you have learned, done, or know to create an understanding. It is always important to understand when you read.

During this unit, i learnt quite a few things, but my favorite part of it all was context clues. I found it interesting to use the words and expressions around an unknown word, to find the definition. I’m happy that i have learnt this way , because it can help me in the future for when i’m not certain of a words meaning. I also learnt that relating your stories to your real life experiences can help you to understand something more.

Can I just ask why Do we have to have tests here can’t teachers just trust that we know how to do our work!?! Anyway infrences are assumptions you have made by peicing together parts of the writing. It’s like the saying put two and two together!

I found really good information for main idea in the Reader’s Handbook pg. 284-285. These 2 pgs have so much information on main idea and it really helped me understand it better.

I learned that if you don’t know a meaning of a word, you use context clues to try to find the meaning of it.

I learned how to make connections from texts to other texts, to myself and to the world around me. I think it helps you understand the text better.
